This book provides an analysis of the evolution of navigation and seaborne trade in the Black Sea, considering the geographic, geological, and hydro-meteorological data, including information from the historical, geopolitical, economic, social, and military frames. 

POSTFAŢĂ 
Marea Neagră este un subiect fabulos. Despre Marea Neagră s-au scris foarte multe
cărţi, dar nu îndeajuns de multe pentru a putea spune că se cunoaşte totul sau
aproape totul despre aceasta.
După mai mulţi ani de studiu asupra Mării Negre am ajuns la concluzia că, de
fapt, am acumulat mai multe întrebări decât răspunsuri.
Această lucrare despre istoria şi mai mult decât atât, despre o poveste frumoasă
a Mării Negre—văzută prin ochii unui ofiţer român de marină, se vrea o fereastră
deschisă pentru descoperirea universului fascinant al unei mări deosebite, unicat a
oceanului planetar.
Cred că mi-ar mai trebui încă pe atâta timp pentru a reduce din numărul
întrebărilor despre Marea Neagră.
Cu scuzele de rigoare şi mulţumiri pentru înţelegere, mi-am permis de a numai
respecta în totalitate regulile citării surselor bibliografice, preluând, poate, mai
mult decât trebuia din lucrările unor oameni de ştiinţă de mare valoare, mari
specialişti în domenii precum: geologia, geografia, hidrometeorologia, istoria,
arheologia, economia, geopolitica, transportul maritim şi navigaţia maritimă,
biologia si ecologia Mării Negre, pentru că nu puteam avea o părere critică
îndreptăţită asupra spuselor lor, în toate aceste domenii, pentru a nu le denatura
şi de putea prelua întocmai, pentru mine şi cititori, rezultatele cercetărilor lor, de
referinţă pentru Marea Neagră.
Este nevoie de mult timp, de pregătire multilaterală, de răbdare, spirit liber şi
minte deschisă pentru a putea cuprinde pe de-a întregul înţelesul evoluţiei Mării
Negre de la origini şi până astăzi, de la paleogeografie la navigaţia modernă.

Afterword
The Black Sea is a fabulous subject. Many books have been written about the Black
Sea, but not many enough to say that all or almost all is known about it.
After several years of studying the Black Sea, I came to the conclusion that, in
fact, I had accumulated more questions than answers.
This work about the history and more than that, about a beautiful story of the
Black Sea—seen through the eyes of a Romanian naval officer—is an open window
to discover the fascinating universe of a special, unique sea of the planetary ocean.
I think I would still have a long way to go to reduce the number of questions about
the Black Sea.
With the necessary apologies and thanks for the understanding, I allowed myself
not to fully respect the rules of citing bibliographic sources, taking over, perhaps,
more than I should, from the works of valuable scientists, great specialists in fields
such as geology, geography, hydrometeorology, history, archeology, economics,
geopolitics, maritime transport and maritime navigation, and biology and ecology
of the Black Sea, because I could not have a justified critical opinion on what they
said, in all these areas, so as not to distort them and to take over exactly, for me and
the readers, the results of their reference research for the Black Sea.
It takes a long time, multilateral training, patience, and an open mind and spirit
to be able to fully understand the evolution of the Black Sea from its origins to the
present day, from paleogeography to modern navigation.
